This week there was a great show on the Discovery Channel – Harley and the Davidsons. It was a history of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company and was very interesting on their growth and troubles since there founding. This sketch is from a drawing that I saw online of a 1915 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Faber Castell Pitt Art pens in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

American Pokeweed is a herbaceous perennial plant in the pokeweed family growing up to 8 feet in height. It is native to the eastern United States and has significant toxicity. It has simple leaves on green to red or purplish stems and a large white taproot. The flowers are green to white, followed by purple to almost black berries which are a food source for songbirds as well as other birds and some small animals. This Pokeweed is in front of our house in the perennial garden. I grows wild in New England and this started growing and comes back every year. It is a nice looking plant that takes over the bed late in the season. This year the Tropical Storm bent it down and it took other perennials with it. This may be the last year in our garden for it in that is so large and I have to cut the staining berries off of it. This structure is now part of the Chatham Harbor Master. Originally I guess it was part of a fish house. There used to be a large brick building nearby that was a ice house to store fish and then was used to store cranberries. That structure burned down. This small structure is right on a dock and has the tower feature next to it that may have been used to dry nets. On the site of the historic Falk’s Market, Julie and Jeff Kinney (Writer of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid) have created a cornerstone in downtown Plainville with an indie bookstore, a café and an event space. An Unlikely Story Bookstore and Café is a beautiful new community gathering place where you can meet amazing authors, enjoy breakfast or lunch, or relax with your new book and a beer (or glass of wine). Previously owned by Merrill Falk – a beloved Yankee general store owner – the market served as a nerve center for the town. Taking care to honor the building’s history, we’ve made it our mission to rejuvenate this sense of community. Falk’s Market, which was originally constructed across the street, was built in the mid-1800’s and it housed numerous businesses since its inception. Part of our unlikely story is our evolution from general store to pharmacy to tearoom to restaurant…back to general store and now into bookstore and café. Carol Chittenden and her mother, Betty Borg, opened the doors of Eight Cousins on July 1, 1986. Established as a children’s bookstore on Main Street in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The store quickly became a favorite stop for Falmouth’s children and their parents, and, as word spread, Eight Cousins became a “must-stop” for visitors as well. Between those two heads they shared the love of books, art, and the value of children, but they had exactly zero knowledge of business. This view is when we left Anejo Mexican Restaurant across the street at dusk. The bright yellow glow of the interior lighting was wonderful. A plein air sketch on a beautiful day over the Labor Day weekend. Stage Harbor is located in Chatham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. This is the working harbor for Chatham with many pleasure and fishing boats. It is also the harbor that the Coast Guard left from for the rescue show in the movie “The Finest Hour. A sure sign that summer is fading into fall. Rose Hips, are the fruit of the rose plant, that typically is red-to-orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species. Rose hips begin to form after successful pollination of flowers in spring or early summer, and ripen in late summer through autumn. These are from Sea Roses in Chatham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Rose hips are used for herbal teas, jams, syrup, beverages and some herbal medicines. They can also be eaten raw, like a berry, if care is used to avoid the hairs inside the fruit.
