Memorial Day

The Knack

Friday Night
Friday night of a long weekend. Monday is Memorial Day I the United States and I allows us a 3 day weekend to enjoy and remember those lost. Starting the weekend off right with great friends, a Gin and Tonic and Grilled fresh local oysters. Perfect!
The Douglaston Club
The Douglaston Club is a private club in Little Neck, NY. We are completing a master plan for the club which is a unique and private yacht, tennis and pool club situated in the heart of the most desirably pleasant sections of New York City. The club is only minutes away by train to Manhattan, but a world away in lifestyle. This quick sketch is of the front porch and I was drawn to the potted geraniums with small American flags. Douglaston, New York
Arriving early for a meeting at another club in Douglaston, New York, I came across this wonderful side porch on a small local house. The porch was covered by a trellis supported by round Tuscan columns. The trellis was covered with wisteria that was on the verge of blooming. Blue Flowers
My wife Lisa took a photo of some beautiful little blue flowers peaking out from under out porch steps. I am not sure what they are, but we were taken by the contrast between the blue flowers and the deep shadows under the steps. I know we did not plant them under the steps, so they are a wonderful Spring surprise. Magnolia
Magnolias are thought to be one of the first flowering plants to evolve on Earth. According to the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, fossil remains show that magnolias were around some for 100 million years. Basically all magnolias follow the same blueprint. Ancient magnolias are still recognizable today as magnolias. Therefore, a magnolia means stability and grace through the ever changing ages. We simply enjoy the beautiful flowers as they bloom in the Spring. This year, the flowers remained on the tree much longer than usual without the rain and wind to take them too early. Dinner Time
