The annual Flattest Century in the East was today. The bike ride starts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and has distances of 30,54,62 and 100 miles. It is a very well organized ride with around 2,000 riders. I only rode the 30 miles this year due to knee issues. The architecture at the campus is classified as brutalism. The buildings and master plan were created by Paul Rudolph, who was sometimes referred to as the worst architect in America. The buildings are all formed concrete with no warmth or human scale. American Pokeweed is a herbaceous perennial plant in the pokeweed family growing up to 8 feet in height. It is native to the eastern United States and has significant toxicity. It has simple leaves on green to red or purplish stems and a large white taproot. The flowers are green to white, followed by purple to almost black berries which are a food source for songbirds as well as other birds and some small animals. This Pokeweed is in front of our house in the perennial garden. I grows wild in New England and this started growing and comes back every year. It is a nice looking plant that takes over the bed late in the season. This year the Tropical Storm bent it down and it took other perennials with it. This may be the last year in our garden for it in that is so large and I have to cut the staining berries off of it. This structure is now part of the Chatham Harbor Master. Originally I guess it was part of a fish house. There used to be a large brick building nearby that was a ice house to store fish and then was used to store cranberries. That structure burned down. This small structure is right on a dock and has the tower feature next to it that may have been used to dry nets. Carol Chittenden and her mother, Betty Borg, opened the doors of Eight Cousins on July 1, 1986. Established as a children’s bookstore on Main Street in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The store quickly became a favorite stop for Falmouth’s children and their parents, and, as word spread, Eight Cousins became a “must-stop” for visitors as well. Between those two heads they shared the love of books, art, and the value of children, but they had exactly zero knowledge of business. This view is when we left Anejo Mexican Restaurant across the street at dusk. The bright yellow glow of the interior lighting was wonderful. This great little building was a Carriage House for Henry B. Metcalf in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 1867, Metcaff helped to form the Boston Button Company as the firm’s senior partner. In 1886 he was elected to a seat in the Rhode Island state Senate, but his ardent stand for prohibition led the liquor industry to oppose his re-election, and he was defeated after only one term in office. Despite the defeat, Metcalf was a leader in pushing for a constitutional amendment to ban the sale of liquor in Rhode Island. To this end he also served as the president of the Rhode Island Temperence Union. In 1893, Metcalf was the Prohibition Party’s candidate for Governor of Rhode Island, winning some 7% of the total vote.
