Betty’s Neck Company
This Buckboard was located in front of a Elliot’s Farm Stand in Lakeville, MA. A Buckboard is an open, four-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage with seating that is attached to a plank stretching between the front and rear axles. Buckboards were typically used in rural areas from the 18th century until the early 20th century. An interesting subject but also very difficult to sketch and paint. This particular one has signs on the sides from Betty’s Neck Company, which is the original name of a Cranberry growing company founded by my wife’s relatives. Milford Memorial Bridge
Traveling back from New Jersey today, I stopped in Milford Connecticut on a recommendation that there was some great architecture in town. This is a sketch of the North Coping Tower. Milford honors its founders and Native Americans with the 1889 bridge on the site of the city’s first mill. The Memorial Bridge, across the Wepawaug River along today’s New Haven Avenue, was built as part of Milford’s 250th anniversary celebration. The bridge features a tower and 29 stones inscribed with the names of local settlers, as well as an eclectic collection of local artifacts. Bolton Public Library
Last page of my second sketchbook. The Bolton Public Library’s building was the gift of Misses Emma and Anna Whitney in honor of their father Captain Joseph Whitney. Its native stone and tile exterior, arched windows, and oak-paneled Gothic interior lead some visitors to guess that it was once a church; in fact, it has always been a library. The building was formally dedicated in 1904. Faber-Castell Pitt Pens in an Alpha Series Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.
Middleboro Farm
This bucolic hay farm is located on Grove Street in Middleboro, MA. The farm is beautiful with the rolling fields, tree lines and large rolled hay bails. I tried to simplify the drawing into simple shapes of color. Faber-Castell Pit Pen, Utrecht and Holbein Watercolors in an Alpha Series Stillman and Birn Sketchbook. Photo courtesy of Lisa Jacques.
Little Harbor Beach
July 3rd – The start of the extended holiday weekend. Lisa and I spent a couple of hours at our favorite local beach with family and friends- Little Harbor in Wareham, Massachusetts. It was a beautiful day and I think everyone had the same idea of spending time at the beach. It was low tide but the water was clear and the shoreline is very interesting. Start of a long weekend
It is the start of a long 3 day weekend to celebrate Independence day in the United States. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend and what better way than to kick it off with a ink sketch of Mattapoisett Harbor in Mattapoisett, MA. A sailboat and power boat tied up to the quay in anticipation of the weekend. Faber-Castell Pitt Art Pens in an Alpha Series Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.
“Never look directly at the sun. Instead, look at the sunflower.” – Vera Nazarian
Sunflowers are so beautiful, happy and a great way to start July. Tonight I brought home some vibrant sunflowers from the market for my wife Lisa. The bones of this sketch are good but I have to practice on not overworking my greens. That’s why we practice. “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” – Groucho Marx
This is the view siting on the Overlook Terrace today between meetings at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. It is the most idyllic setting with the beautiful manicured greens and fairways and all of the old growth trees. The pool is off to the left and in the evening, members relax in the Adirondack Chairs adjacent to the practice green. Green, Green and more Green
I snapped a photo as we walked by the Plymouth Guild for the Arts to use as a base for this sketch. All winter everyone was so tired of the snow and I was tired of sketching and painting the different shading on the white snow longing for green. Now the challenge is for painting foliage and all the variations of green in nature. This is something that I have to work at to get the correct greens and not over work the colors.
