North Easton Train Station

An elevation study of the old train station in North Easton, Massachusetts. The North Easton Railroad Station, is a historic railroad station designed by noted American architect. H. Richardson. It is a relatively small station, a single story in height with Richardson’s characteristic heavy masonry and outsized roof. Its long axis runs north-south with the tracks, now disused, along its west side. The building is laid out symmetrically within, with a large passenger room at each end (one for women, the other for men). The station’s facade is constructed of rough-faced, random ashlar of gray granite with a brownstone belt course and trim. Two large, semicircular arches punctuate each of the long facades, inset with windows and doorways, and ornamented with carvings of a beast’s snarling head; a further semicircular arch projects to form the east facade’s porte-cochere. Eaves project deeply over all sides, supported by plain wooden brackets. This drawing was done from the warmth of the car during a snow storm. Rock Hopper

A quick little sketch of my Specialized Rock Hopper Mountain bike. It has been a while since I have been on either of my bikes and especially my mountain bike. Between my knee injury and the slick roads from the snows, it has been a while. This is a sketch of the rear hub with the disk brake. It is a sweet ride and I cannot wait to get back on the trails. It will be the road bike first. Lamy Safari fountain pen with Noodler’s black ink and Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Kite Boarder

A quick sketch of a Kite Boarder enjoying a winter day at Harding Beach in Chatham, Massachusetts. The air temperature was about 30 degrees and the water temperature about 40 degrees. It is always enjoyable to watch the Kite Boarders and the Wind Surfers. Minimal line work with a Pilot Falcon fountain pen with Noodler’s Black ink and  Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook.

Jerry’s Artarama

A quick sketch from my car in the parking lot of Jerry’s Artarama in Providence, Rhode Island. Jerry’s is a great discount art store located near the office. I was very fortunate that my staff gave me a gift certificate for Jerry’s during the holidays and I will put it to good use. Worcester Market

The Worcester Market Building is a historic commercial building at 831 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. When it was built in 1914, it was believed to be the largest grocery supply building in the nation. It was built for Fayette Asyril Amidon, who had founded the Worcester Market in 1894 after establishing a similar enterprise in Providence, Rhode Island. The exterior of the building is terracotta that has been decorated with medallions on agricultural themes. The market was designed with modern ideas of efficiency. The main floor, covering 25,000 square feet, was devoted to retail space, and was designed to comfortably handle 4,500 customers. The basement and second floor were storage space, arranged so that supplies were located near their retail points on the main floor. These areas were connected to the main floor by elevators, eliminating the need for delivery vehicles to move in customer aisles. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1090. Faber-Castell Pitt pens with Holbein and Daniel Smith watercolors in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Worcester City Hall

Worcester City Hall was designed by Peabody and Sterns and built by the Norcross Brothers in 1898. The Italianate structure was built with a granite exterior, and was partly modeled after Italian Renaissance palazzos. Its tower shares some similarity to that of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, and the interior of the building extensively uses marble, commonly seen in Italian Renaissance buildings, and features an interior courtyard where the upper floors have balconies supported by decorated round arches. City Hall is currently the 4th tallest building in Worcester and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This sketch has a feel of an old post card with the muted colors. Brownstone feature

A quick pen and ink sketch of a brownstone in Worcester, Massachusetts. I was in town for a site meeting and this upper level covered porch was very interesting with the round carved columns and deep shadows. The sketch is from a photo that I took and the perspective is off in that it drops too fast off the page to the left. oh well, practice. Faber-Castell Pitt Art pens in black and some grays in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.
