“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It’s what sunflowers do.” ― Helen Keller
Sunflowers are like the sun itself. Bright, vibrant and cheerful. These sunflowers are in a glass vase on out dining room table and brighten up the room. The sketchbook paper does not take washes really well and it is difficult to mix intense colors on the paper. Holbein watercolors in an Alpha series Stillman and Birn sketchbook.
Main Street Wine and Gourmet
Tonight we went to an art opening by one of favorite artists, Susan Overstreet. The location was at Main Street Wine and Gourmet on Main Street in Orleans, MA. It is a great venue as a mezzanine overlooking the wine shop. Beautiful artwork, wine and snacks made a wonderful evening. This view is the exterior as the sunset was reflecting in the windows of the shop. Pilot Namiki Falcon fountain pen with Noodler’s black ink and Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.
Hear no Evil
I am always drawn to the water and the Port of New Bedford is very vibrant and challenging. The port of New Bedford is the highest valued commercial port in the United States. Most of the vessels are commercial scallop fisherman trolling south of Nantucket. Tonight I was able to draw this sketch on site (en plein air) on a beautiful summer evening. The “Hear no Evil” is a commercial scallop fishing vessel and was built in 1987. It is also one of the larger fishing boats out of New Bedford. This was a very challenging view in that now only was I looking at the tow vessels in the foreground, but also the masts, outriggers and lines of an additional 10 boars in the background. Olde No. 5
This is an old relic of a car located in a yard near our house that has always interested me. I am not sure of what it was in it’s heyday, but it appears to be a 1928 Model A open-cab roadster. It is missing the body from the steering wheel back and has an old tractor seat centered on the chassis. Holbein and Mission watercolors in a 5″ x 8″ Moleskine watercolor sketchbook.
Civil War Memorial Building
The Civil War Memorial Building in Bridgewater. Massachusetts sits adjacent to the Town Green. The building was dedicated in 1881 to the 37 individuals that gave their life in the Civil War. It is a beautiful brick structure with detailed carved brownstone details and copper features. Faber-Castell Pitt pens with watercolor in a Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.
Gladiolus Flowers
I always loved the Gladiolus Flower in that we always had them in our yard growing up in Southern California. The Gladiolus is sometimes also called the ‘Sword lily’. The genus occurs in Asia, Mediterranean Europe, South Africa, and tropical Africa. Their stems are generally unbranched, producing 1 to 9 narrow, sword-shaped, longitudinal grooved leaves, enclosed in a sheath. The flower spikes are large, one-sided, are variously colored, pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.
Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod
Truro Vineyards has been in existence since 1992 but the house and the estate date back nearly two centuries. Built in 1813, the square dignified Federal house was part of a farm from its earliest beginnings. In 1930 famed artist Edward Hopper was inspired by the property and painted “Rich’s House”. He returned a year later to paint “Rich’s Barn”. During the 1940’s, the Richs produced magnificent cantaloupes grown in the estate’s warm, well drained sandy soil. Later, this same soil and site would prove to be a perfect spot for growing grapes. It is a perfect location to sit on the lawn in Adirondack chairs and enjoy a glass of their craft. P.B. Boulangerie
PB Boulangrie is located Perched in the south end of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, at the bend of Lecount Hollow Road, inside a pink rambler that last housed a seafood shack, the bakery and cafe has quickly won an enraptured following among locals and tourists alike, thanks to inexpensive pain au chocolat, crisp cranberry bread, lip-puckering lemon tarts and oversize flour-dusted batards and boules so perfect they might have been airlifted straight from the Left Bank. Fantastic Bakery and Bistro by 2 French Chefs that learned under Daniel Boulud at Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. Great vista to sketch with the pink walls and the bright flags. Sandy’s
Sandy’s on Plymouth Beach is much more than a beach snack stand. Great food, generous drinks and a fantastic view right on Plymouth Beach in Plymouth, MA. A great evening with friends and a wonderful sunset that seemed to last forever with purples and oranges.
