Eight Cousins

Carol Chittenden and her mother, Betty Borg, opened the doors of Eight Cousins on July 1, 1986. Established as a children’s bookstore on Main Street in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The store quickly became a favorite stop for Falmouth’s children and their parents, and, as word spread, Eight Cousins became a “must-stop” for visitors as well. Between those two heads they shared the love of books, art, and the value of children, but they had exactly zero knowledge of business. This view is when we left Anejo Mexican Restaurant across the street at dusk. The bright yellow glow of the interior lighting was wonderful. Beth’s Café

On our way onto the Cape for our Saturday road trip, we were going to stop at our usual spot for breakfast but the power was out in that area of town which forced us to explore. We found this wonderful little café an had a wonderful scrambled egg wrap. Beth’s Bakery and Café is owned by local lifetime residents of the beautiful historical town of Sandwich, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. This building was originally built as a Puritan Church and was owned later by the Catholic Church. The interiors are very simple with the original wood floors and a wonderful display case of baked goods. Roma Tomatoes

Roma Tomato a plum tomato popularly used both for canning and producing tomato paste because of their slender and firm nature. Commonly found, Roma tomatoes are also known as Italian tomatoes or Italian Plum Tomatoes. Roma tomatoes are egg or pear shaped and red when fully ripe. They have fewer seeds than other varieties which make them good for sauces. This sketch is of 3 tomatoes that varied in color from a very light green to a ripe red/orange. Cattails

Cattails are wetland plants with a unique flowering spike, flat blade like leaves that reach heights from 3 to 10 feet.  They are one of the most common plants in large marshes and on the edge of ponds. Under the right conditions, cattails can grow and spread vigorously.  The pollinated flowers develop into fluffy seed heads, blowing across a pond in autumn breezes.  Just as commonly, cattails spread through their root system. In fact, cattails at the edge of pond can grow faster than fertilized corn in a field!  Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.

Cape Rep Theatre

The Cape Rep Theatre was founded in 1986 in Brewster, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Their current home is the former Camp Monomoy which includes the Indoor Theatre (former Dining Hall), Outside Theatre, Cape House and the Barn shown in this sketch. The Barn was built in in the late 19th century. A current fund raising effort is underway to restore the barn for continued use by Cape Rep. Tonight we saw an amazing performance of Hairspray. Westport River Vineyards

We had a great time at the Summer Concert Series at Westport River Vineyards in Westport, Massachusetts. A very stormy evening with lightning all around, but it held off until the concert was almost complete. A fun thing to do on a summer evening. You can bring your own food and drink with beer and wine made on the property available also in addition to a raw bar and a food truck that had excellent food. This is a sketch of a barn and silo on an adjacent property. It was tucked amongst an abundance of green foliage.
