Orleans Garden Tour

Today we spent part of the day enjoying a tour of 6 home gardens hosted by the Orleans Garden Club in Orleans, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The gardens were gorgeous with all of the blooming flowers and lush greens. This view is from a house with 5 acres of woods planted with shade loving plants and a barn that overlooked this small pond. Wonderful afternoon enjoying nature and listening to some wonderful music at each location. Faber Castell Pitt art pens with Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Fishing Boat

This fishing boar pulled into the dock in Falmouth Harbor in Cape Cod when we were waiting to go to dinner. The boat pulled in and unloaded to a waiting truck (The Clam Man) and was heading back out to sea in about 5 minutes. I love working boats and this was a quick sketch using my Lamy fountain pen with Noodler’s black ink in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

The Pearl

Dinner at the Pearl on Wellfleet Harbor. Pearl’s building is a unique combination of old historical Cape Cod meets modern restaurant design. The heart of the structure is the peaked roof, visible over the open air kitchen. This structure was the original A frame of the famous Spit & Chatter Club which initially sat across Commercial St. from the current location. It was moved to the current site and redesigned into the well known Captain Higgins restaurant. Pearl’s design enclosed the peak from the outside, while leaving it visible when viewing up from around or in the new open kitchen. Lobsters and Fish

While sitting at the bar for dinner at The Pearl in Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, this was the view across the marsh. The not descript building has a lobster sign on the railing and a fish sign on the wall. This is the Wellfleet Marine Corporation that was founded in 1964 as a modest tackle and boat rental shop on the town pier. It now has 2 boatyards, gift shop, fish market and still the tackle and boat rentals. Pilot Falcon fountain pen with Noodler’s Black Ink in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Lupines

The Fort Hill area of Eastham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod is a beautiful rolling field overlooking the ocean that explodes with colorful wild flowers in late spring and early summer. On this day, the first bloomers are the Lupines in a compact area just off of the trail. Lupines have soft green to grey-green leaves which may be coated in silvery hairs, often densely so. The leaf blades are usually palmately divided into five to 28 leaflets. The flowers are produced in dense or open whorls on an erect spike, each flower 1–2 cm long. The pea-like flowers have an upper standard, or banner, two lateral wings, and two lower petals fused into a keel. The flower shape has inspired common names such as bluebonnets and Quaker bonnets. Coast Guard Station House

The station house is located at the Sandwich Marina and was constructed as an updated office and residential (berthing) facility for the U.S. Coast Guard Cape Cod Canal Station following the demolition of the original facility at a site nearby with the widening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1936. The new facility provided space for the central administrative and social support functions of the station following a standard Colonial Revival-styled module employed elsewhere by the Coast Guard for similar facilities during the period. Similar-styled station houses exist in the region, including station houses at Block Island (New Harbor) and Point Judity, RI. and were built under federal New Deal WPA/PWS initiatives during the 1935-37 period. These buildings collectively represent the early 20th century function of the Coast Guard’s lifesaving stations along the New England coast. The sketch is at dusk when most of the structure was very dark, almost black with the dusk sky.
