Eel Pond Canal

This is a sketch from a photo that I snapped last weekend in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The location is the small canal that connects Great Harbor to Eel Pond. The Eel Pond Draw Bridge is used to allow Water Street to cross the canal and is located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
The drawbridge was rebuilt during the winter of 2008-2009. I chose to make a tonal study of this sketch. Faber-Castel Pit Art pens in Black and shades of Grey in a 9 x 12 Alpha Series Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.

Milford Memorial Bridge

Traveling back from New Jersey today, I stopped in Milford Connecticut on a recommendation that there was some great architecture in town. This is a sketch of the North Coping Tower. Milford honors its founders and Native Americans with the 1889 bridge on the site of the city’s first mill. The Memorial Bridge, across the Wepawaug River along today’s New Haven Avenue, was built as part of Milford’s 250th anniversary celebration. The bridge features a tower and 29 stones inscribed with the names of local settlers, as well as an eclectic collection of local artifacts. Ridgewood Country Club

Another day in New Jersey for work. This is another view of the front façade of Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. The club is beautiful and has just been listed on the National Registry of Historic places along with all 27 golf holes. The original structure was designed by architect Clifford Wendehack and the golf course was designed by Albert Warren Tillinghast, the preeminent golf architect of the 1920s. Chatham Lighthouse

Chatham Lighthouse, known as Twin Lights prior to 1923, is a lighthouse in Chatham, Massachusetts, near the “elbow” of Cape Cod. The station was established in 1808, the second light on Cape Cod. To distinguish it from Highland Light, the first Cape Cod light, and to act as a range, twin octagonal 40-foot (12 m) wooden towers were built. They were on skids so that they could be moved to keep them in line with the entrance channel as it shifted. The current structures were built in 1879 of brick lined cast iron with a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens. Today, the former keeper’s house is an active U.S. Coast Guard station, and on-duty personnel living quarters. The Black Cat Shack out Back

Owners David Colombo and Scott Brownlee invite you to the harbor-side Black Cat Tavern overlooking the water in Hyannis, MA. The Black Cat tavern is a traditional Cape Cod Seafood restaurant. A new addition is the Shack Out Back is the Cape’s newest hidden gem. You’ll find our little outdoor oasis tucked in behind the Black Cat Harbor Shack. Grab a stool at the roomy bar and watch as your oysters and clams are shucked to order. We have always loved the Black Cat and the Shack out Back is a wonderful, open air bar and dining venue. Nobska Lighthouse

Nobska Light is located at the division between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound in Woods Hole, Massachusetts on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod. The light station was established in 1826, and the current tower dates to 1876. The light station was added to the National Register of historic Places as Nobska Point Light Station in 1987. Nobska Light is set at the very southwestern tip of Cape Cod, separated from the shore by Nobska Road. The light station includes four buildings: the tower, the keeper’s house, a radio beacon house, and a small oil house. The tower has a brick interior and a metal exterior, formed out of four rings of iron paneling, and rises to a height of 40 feet. A quick graphite value sketch completed with Kohi-nor solid graphite 4B pencil in a Stillman and Birn Alpha Sketchbook.

Mac’s Shack

Mac’s Shack is a quintessential Cape Cod restaurant with a contemporary twist. M<ac’s is located in a 19th century house that was once a nautical shop and the lobsterman on our roof is an homage to the Lobster Hutt, circa 1971. Mac’s is one of our favorite restaurants on the Cape and the food is amazing from fish and chips to sushi and a savory Bermuda Chowder. Always fresh. Beautiful sunny day to be on the Cape for art, food and meeting people. I sketched this scene sitting on a sloped lawn across the street from the restaurant. My favorite type of sketching, outside on a beautiful day, getting lost in the enjoyment of the moment. Pitt Art Pens, Pelikan watercolors in an 8″ x 10″ Alpha Series Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.

Edgewood Country Club

Another road trip to New Jersey for work. We stopped at Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, New Jersey to take some measurements of the Mid-way House. Some interesting architecture on the site with this building being probably the oldest with the most architectural detail. The Beachcomber

A sure sign of summer is first pilgrimage to Wellfleet Massachusetts to visit one of our favorite places – The Beachcomber. The Comaah, as locally referred to, sits on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the beautiful National Seashore. Most of the time it is standing room only and is frequented by an eclectic mix of young and old, beachgoers, locals and visitors. We were able to luck into 2 bar seats for some adult beverages and shrimp and Wellfleet oysters from the Raw Bar. So much fun.
