Cooks Brook Beach

Cooks Brook Beach is located in beautiful Eastham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The beach is located on the bay side of the cape. This is a view of the dunes at the edge of the beach just before sunset on a cloudy fall day. This was my first sketch in a Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook. The paper is 2x as heavy as the Alpha sketchbook. It takes the watercolor beautifully. I bought this because Jerry’s Artarama was out of the Alpha sketchbooks. I think this will be my sketchbook in the future.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Rememberance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. This sketch is from a photograph from my friend Robin who works for the United States Coast Guard. Faber-Castel Pitt fine liner with Pelikan watercolors in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Truro Public Library

Today we visited the Truro Public Library for an Art opening sponsored by our favorite art gallery – The Addison Gallery in Orleans, Massachusetts. The opening was for  “In Hopper’s Town” – Celebrating the work of contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Truro, the town he chose to build his home and to paint for decades. It was a fantastic event with wonderful artists and their works. Amazing talent. This is sketch of the library entrance as dusk was falling. I like the richness of the foreground building with the layers of colors. The scan washed out some of the depth overall, but I should have darkened the entire building more. Savvy on Main

A view of some of the local shops in the quaint village of Orleans, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. I was sitting in the parking lot of Savvy on Main (part of the foreground sign) sketching the shops across Main Street. Kool Kone

Finally catching up with the scanning of my sketches. Kool Kone is a local favorite in Wareham, Massachusetts. It is open during the summer season and is always busy serving up ice cream treats  burgers and sandwiches along with excellent fired favorites like clams, scallops and fish. This view is of a small corner of the order windows that face the street. We have to get there one more time before they close for the season. Mashpee Sunset

After a gray day with drizzle most of the day, the sun came out for a spectacular sunset. The location is Mashpee Commons in Mashpee, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Mashpee is a planned retail and office complex with a wonderful Cape Cod Aesthetic. This view is towards the central building with the colorful sunset and parting clouds beyond. Tihonet Pond

This sketch is of the spillway from Tihonet Pond in Tihonet Village which is part of Wareham, Massachusetts. Adjacent to this spillway is a collection of buildings that are part of A.D. Makepeace Company, the world’s largest cranberry grower. The company, over time, became pretty much self-contained. They used to actually make the boxes and barrels used for storing and shipping the cranberries. They also had their own fleet of vehicles, complete with a service station and garages. The building that is now the market was once used as a machinist shop.

Tobey Hospital Clock Tower

From its beginnings, Tobey Hospital has played a major role in the health and well-being of Wareham citizens. Tobey Hospital has grown from a small facility some 75 years ago to an institution with 600 employees today. Tobey Hospital was organizationally established in 1938 and opened its doors for the first time in 1940 with 40 inpatient beds, a newborn nursery, two operating rooms, X-ray facilities and a laboratory. Major construction efforts ensued in the following decades to include the additions of North and South wings; the Theodore H. Barth Intensive Care Unit,; the Susanna K. Tobey Wing (a four-story addition that cost $2.5 million, but nearly doubled patient capacity); and a new Emergency/Radiology Wing, which also featured a new Surgical Day Care Unit and Intermediate Care Unit. This sketch is of the clock tower on the corner of the Susanna K. Tobey Wing and is an integral part of the main entrance. Prismacolor Premier fine line markers in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.

Gateway to the Cape

A quick ink sketch of the Gateway to Cape Cod. This monument is located on Route 28 as it enters Wareham, MA and is paired with a similar one on the other side of the street that says Wareham, Massachusetts, Incorporated 1739. Wareham is often considered the gateway to the cape in that it is the last town on the mainland before crossing the bridges to the cape. Chatham Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach in Chatham, Massachusetts, is a beautiful, large beach close to the center of the picturesque town of Chatham. It is located across the street from a small Coast Guard Station and the Chatham Light lighthouse. This area was not much of a beach until the Great Barrier Beach broke due to pounding storm swells and hurricanes. The Chatham Break, as it is called, is a growing ocean channel between Nauset Beach and Monomoy Island. This new channel has shifted a significant amount of sand from the north to the south and created this magnificent beach. Nauset Beach protects it from heavy swells, but you can watch the waves crest about 200 yards away at the break. Beach grass, small dunes, and million-dollar homes surround the vast sand beach. Holbein watercolors in a Stillman and Birn sketchbook.
