Sailing the Canal

A beautiful evening for a sail along the Cape Cod Canal. The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway in the state of Massachusetts connecting Cape Cod Bay to the north with Buzzards Bay to the south. The canal is part of the Atlantic Intercostal Waterway, the approximately 7 mile long canal traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the state’s mainland. Most of its length follows tidal rivers widened to 480 feet and deepened to 32 feet at mean low water, shaving 135 miles off the journey around the Cape for its approximately 14,000 annual users. Highland Light

The Highland Light (previously known as Cape Cod Light is an active lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro, Massachusetts. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod. The park and lighthouse area owned by the National Park Service. The present location of the lighthouse is not the original site. First Encounter Beach

A beautiful summer day at the beach on Cape Cod. The crowds are already starting to dwindle as school starts up. This area of Cape Cod was originally settled by the Nauset tribe, Eastham was the site where in 1620 a hunting expedition landed, comprised from the crew of the sailing vessel Mayflower, which had stopped in Provincetown harbor on Cape Cod Bay after a rough crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, which led to the first encounter of the Pilgrims and the local Nauset people at First Encounter Beach. Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House

Today we had our company summer party at Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House at Oakland Beach in Warwick, Rhode Island. We recently designed a new structure adjacent to the classic beach stand. Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder house is one of Rhode Island’s famous landmarks as well as the oldest beach stand in RI. It was built in 1924. The building has survived two major hurricanes and was standing on its original structure until it was renovated in 2008. The beach stand was originally called Gus’s. Gaetano Gravino worked at Gus’s and in 1989 he purchased the beach stand. Great time, camaraderie and plenty of food. Ridgewood Avenue School

A little free time prior to another country club meeting. Ridgewood Avenue School is an upper elementary school with approximately 600 students in Grades 3-6.  The school builds on the foundation skills learned in the primary schools, and through an authentic and hands-on approach, encourages students to love and take responsibility for their own learning. The building itself is located in the heart of the Borough and is a tan brick with carved limestone details and a beautiful red clay tile roof. The school is listed on the State Historic Register. This charming turn of the century building houses the only auditorium in the district.

Main Street Wine and Gourmet

Tonight we went to an art opening by one of favorite artists, Susan Overstreet. The location was at Main Street Wine and Gourmet on Main Street in Orleans, MA. It is a great venue as a mezzanine overlooking the wine shop. Beautiful artwork, wine and snacks made a wonderful evening. This view is the exterior as the sunset was reflecting in the windows of the shop. Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod

Truro Vineyards has been in existence since 1992 but the house and the estate date back nearly two centuries. Built in 1813, the square dignified Federal house was part of a farm from its earliest beginnings. In 1930 famed artist Edward Hopper was inspired by the property and painted “Rich’s House”. He returned a year later to paint “Rich’s Barn”. During the 1940’s, the Richs produced magnificent cantaloupes grown in the estate’s warm, well drained sandy soil. Later, this same soil and site would prove to be a perfect spot for growing grapes. It is a perfect location to sit on the lawn in Adirondack chairs and enjoy a glass of their craft.
